These three types of fruits are Indonesia’s mainstay of exports
Despite having many types of tropical fruit, Indonesia has not been able to use it as an export commodity. The export value of Indonesian fruits in 2013 was only USD418.08 million or around Rp4.59 trillion, up 4 percent compared to 2012. However, the export value of these fruits not only came from processed fruits but also raw fruit.
From a number of raw fruits that are exported ranging from guava, salak, rambutan, pineapple, durian, mangosteen, melon, mango, orange to watermelon, there are three fruits that are excellent for Indonesian exports. The fruit is mangosteen, salak, and mango.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) during 2013 alone, Indonesia’s mangosteen exports reached USD5.73 million or around Rp63 billion. This figure is far lower compared to 2012, which was USD17.4 million. However, improvements in exports began to be seen in 2014. In the two months of 2014 (January-February), Indonesia had exported mangosteen worth USD1.66 million, an increase of 150 percent over the same period last year.
Unfortunately, although the value of exports continues to increase, Indonesia has not been able to export fruits throughout the year. In the middle of the year, Indonesia’s fruit exports were mostly zero. Indonesia’s exports are still very dependent on fruit season.
